“I Like Lots of Interior Design Styles, and I Cannot Lie… But Here’s How I Choose the Right One”

The other day, I was reflecting on how every home my husband, David, and I have lived in over the past 18 years has had its own distinct style. We’ve moved through six different homes, from a downtown Chicago condo to an 1870s farmhouse in Michigan to a 1930s Spanish Bungalow in South Florida. Each space felt like “us,” but the furniture, color palettes, and overall vibe evolved based on the home itself.
It made me realize—I don’t stick to just one interior design style. If someone asked, “What’s your style?” I’d probably say it’s a mix. But the truth is, I let the home guide the design.
How I Determine the Right Interior Design Style for a Home
Before choosing a look, I ask myself:
✅ What colors am I naturally drawn to?
✅ How does the light change in the space throughout the day?
✅ What’s the purpose of this space? (A bustling gathering place or a quiet retreat?)
✅ Are there architectural details I want to highlight?
✅ Does the home have quirks I should play up—or downplay?

There are a LOT of design styles out there, and honestly? I love them all. It’s why many designers find it easier to style other people’s homes than their own!
But here’s the key: Your home should function beautifully for YOU.
The way I design my personal space might not be how you style yours—but that’s the beauty of home design. It’s personal. It’s about making your space work for your life in a way that feels intentional and effortlessly, you.
