The Season of Lightening Up

There’s something about spring—the longer days, the open windows, the scent of something blooming—that makes us crave a reset. But if you’re staring down the corners of clutter collecting since last fall, you’re not alone.

At Stanton Style Studio, we believe in thoughtful design and beautiful function. That extends to the way we let go, reset, and reimagine our spaces—not all at once, but one room at a time.

🧺 Why Room-by-Room Works for Spring Decluttering

Trying to “declutter the whole house” is like trying to run a marathon with no training: overwhelming, exhausting, and often abandoned halfway through.

Instead, give yourself permission to go room by room. Each space gets your full attention. Each finished space brings momentum.

Three things: something green, something loved, nothing extra.

🛋️ Living Room: Edit & Lighten Checklist

Focus Areas:

  • Coffee table clutter

  • Toss pillows & throws

  • Media consoles

  • Magazine/book stacks

Quick Wins:

  • Remove heavy textures (velvets, knits) and swap in lighter spring textiles.

  • Limit surfaces to 3 styled items max.

  • Re-home random chargers, remotes, or toys to hidden storage.

Visual Tip: Snap a photo of the room—your eyes often miss what the camera catches.

🍽️ Kitchen: Clear Counters, Clear Mind

Focus Areas:

Clean white kitchen with high-end gas range and modern mixed-metal light fixtures.
Keep those countertops clear with fewer small appliances
  • Countertops

  • Pantry

  • Junk drawer

  • Fridge & freezer

Quick Wins:

  • Pick 3 small appliances to leave out—store the rest.

  • Toss expired pantry items and consolidate duplicates.

  • Use clear bins or baskets to keep like-with-like.

Pro Move: Label everything you intend to maintain. A labeled bin = accountability.

Simplify nightstands and add a calming linen spray.

🛏️ Bedroom: Calm the Chaos

Focus Areas:

  • Nightstands

  • Closets & dressers

  • Under-bed storage

  • Floors & surfaces

    Quick Wins:

  • Keep nightstands minimal: lamp, book, water, maybe a candle.

  • Sort clothing by keep, donate, and try on again.

  • Rotate seasonal wardrobes—spring deserves breathing room.

Self-Care Tip: Wash your bedding, spritz a calming linen spray, and enjoy that “hotel feel” for free.

Store those extras (TP, shampoo) out of sight

🚿 Bathroom: Streamline Your Essentials Checklist

Focus Areas:

  • Countertops

  • Medicine cabinet

  • Under-sink storage

  • Shower & tub

Quick Wins:

  • Remove duplicates and expired products.

  • Group daily items in a tray or bin.

  • Store backstock (extra TP, shampoo) out of sight.

Mini Ritual: Add eucalyptus in your shower for a spa-like reset every morning.

A drop zone: entry/exit with a mirror, dish for keys and glasses, and a basket with shoes
A small dish for eyewear and keys, a basket for shoes make for tidy entry and exits.

🧸 Bonus Space: The Drop Zone

Think: Entryways, mudrooms, command centers.

Quick Wins:

  • Hang hooks for grab-and-go gear.

  • Use trays or baskets to catch keys, bags, or paper clutter.

  • Revisit once a week to reset the space.

Final Thought: Progress Over Perfection

Spring doesn’t demand perfection—it invites growth. And growth is messy, nonlinear, and deeply personal.

This phrase—progress over perfection—was something I used to say often in my digital design leadership days. Then, it was about encouraging teams to iterate boldly, to move forward even when things weren’t polished yet. Now, I see how deeply that mindset belongs in our homes too.

Decluttering one room at a time isn’t just a method; it’s a mindset. It’s giving yourself permission to start small, and keep going. You’re not just clearing clutter—you’re making space for a home that supports who you are and who you’re becoming.
